Philosophy & methods

When you work with me, your dog’s wellbeing is at the core of their behaviour modification protocol. We only use fear-free methods that have been scientifically studied and proven to address anxiety. Specifically, we use techniques like:

  • Desensitization

  • Counterconditioning

  • Management

  • Positive reinforcement

  • Antecedent arrangement

  • Enrichment strategies

Research shows us that these methods are more effective than training that incorporates punishment. Plus, they feel better, too.

We do not use intimidation or startling techniques, coercion, pain, punishment, or deprivation of basic needs to teach dogs new skills. We do not use tools or methods such as:

  • Bark collars

  • Electric collars (e-collars)

  • Prong collars

  • Choke chains

  • Leash pops or corrections

  • “Cry it out”

  • Spray bottles

  • Cans of coins or pet corrector

While these tools and tactics might stop a behaviour in the moment, they don’t help your dog understand what you want them to do.

  • Food rewards

  • A treat pouch

  • A clicker

We do use tools and equipment like:

  • Y-shaped harness

  • Long lines

  • Toys
